SPANIT: The Erasmus+ Project Presented in Minturno That Turns Inclusion into an Educational Opportunity

On December 19, 2024, the charming town of Minturno hosted a major event dedicated to the Erasmus+ programme for the Adult Education Sector (EDA). This initiative brought together experts, Third Sector professionals, school leaders, and representatives from Italian and European organizations to explore the role of non-formal education as a driver of innovation and social cohesion.

Among the many impactful projects showcased, SPANIT—presented by Karin Callipo and Annabella Di Finizio—stood out for its vision and tangible impact.

A Bridge Between Cultures for a More Inclusive School Environment

The SPANIT project (Spanish-Italian Tourism Terminology and Innovative Training Tools) was designed to improve the hosting and integration process for migrants and disadvantaged learners within educational contexts. A European initiative funded by Erasmus+, SPANIT is notable for its innovative approach to managing multicultural and multigenerational classrooms.

During the Infoday, Karin Callipo—project coordinator—explained how SPANIT developed original educational tools for teaching bilingual tourism terminology. At the same time, it contributed to building more inclusive and participatory learning environments. With a focus on tourism—a strategic sector in local communities like Minturno—SPANIT transforms this industry into a powerful driver of education and inclusion.

Annabella Di Finizio, Erasmus+ EDA Ambassador for Campania, emphasized how the project has succeeded in strengthening teamwork in multicultural classrooms and promoting the exchange of best practices among Italian and Spanish educators. The project's added value, she noted, lies in its ability to combat prejudice and discrimination through mutual understanding, turning diversity into an asset.

A Method That Also Helps Institutions Grow

In addition to the direct benefits for learners, SPANIT has had a significant impact on the educational institutions involved. Many schools and training centers have enriched their course offerings thanks to the project, improving the quality of teaching and the effectiveness of inclusion pathways. The methodologies introduced support a cooperative and dynamic approach that actively engages all participants, regardless of their cultural or linguistic background.

Erasmus+ as a Catalyst for Local Transformation

The event in Minturno—moderated by Piera De Gironimo, teacher and Erasmus+ EDA Ambassador for Lazio—offered a valuable space for sharing experiences and insights. The many projects presented throughout the day showed how Erasmus+ is playing a concrete role in transforming local communities, especially in so-called “peripheral” areas that hold great human and cultural potential.

SPANIT fits perfectly within this narrative, showing how adult education can be a powerful tool for change and social inclusion. With its focus on intercultural competence and professional language, SPANIT now stands as a replicable model for other educational contexts across Europe.

Toward a Fairer and More Inclusive Educational Network

The day concluded with a guided tour of Minturno’s historic center, rounding off an event that successfully blended reflection, innovation, and local heritage promotion. Thanks to the passion and expertise of its creators and presenters, SPANIT left a lasting impression—reminding us that a more equitable and welcoming Europe is also built in the classroom.
